Art Papers Submissions

Art Papers offers artists, theorists, historians, technologists, and researchers an opportunity to present contributions within and across disciplines to an interdisciplinary audience. The program is a unique opportunity for artists to add another dimension to their creative voice through writing and to present the motivation, thought process, inspiration, and methodologies behind their work that allow them to make contributions to global culture, to their specific artistic field, to society, and to the graphics industry. This can open up broader dialogues with scientists, industry, and technologists, and create a shared body of creative knowledge. 

SIGGRAPH 2017 welcomes Art Papers submissions from artists, theorists, historians, critical makers, storytellers, and technologists that address all digital arts modalities, computer graphics, and interactive techniques, and encourages submissions with an emphasis on the theme of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality. Artists have pioneered digital art forms, including virtual, augmented, and mixed realities for decades. In the midst of a renaissance in consumer virtual and augmented reality technologies poised to transform all areas of human endeavor, they continue to innovate and advance immersive and experiential culture to bridge the digital-physical interface. We encourage paper submissions that address topics such as the the role and history of the arts in pioneering virtual and augmented technologies in relation to the new wave of emerging consumer VR and AR; the interaction of aesthetics, visual imagery, soundscapes, and haptics within immersive experiences; conceptual or theoretical perspectives on virtual/augmented reality art, performance, and narratives; reflection upon the impact of virtual/augmented technologies in shaping the global cultural landscape; and far-ranging topics such as the contributions of artistic approaches to the next generation of immersive experiences that bridge the digital-physical interface in art, entertainment, analytics, gaming, medicine, science, engineering, robotics, space exploration, communication, tourism, transportation, or cultural exchange.

Art Papers are submitted in one of four categories (project description, theory/criticism, methods, or history) and selected by an international jury of scholars, artists, and developers of immersive technologies.  

Authors present Art Papers in 20-minute sessions that include five minutes of Q&A. The papers are published in a special issue of Leonardo, The Journal of the International Society of the Arts, Sciences and Technology (MIT Press). This full-color issue includes visual documentation of the works exhibited in the Art Gallery. Publication coincides with SIGGRAPH 2017, offering authors an expedited publication timeframe, and will mark the ninth year of collaboration between SIGGRAPH and Leonardo.

If your work is accepted for presentation at SIGGRAPH 2017:

  • You must complete the ACM Rights Management Form. The form will be sent to all submitters whose work is accepted.  
  • Your representative image and text may be used for promotional purposes. Several SIGGRAPH 2017 programs – Art Gallery, Computer Animation Festival, Real-Time Live!, Technical Papers, and all installation programs – will prepare preview videos for pre-conference promotion of accepted content, which may include a portion of the video you submitted for review.

How to Submit

SIGGRAPH 2017 Art Papers must be submitted in one of these four categories:

Project Description
A description of a creative work or artistic/collaborative process with particular emphasis on its historical and/or theoretical grounding or significance.

Theory or Criticism
Exposition of a significant issue for contemporary digital art and design practice as it relates to SIGGRAPH topics and/or the theme of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality.

Methods
Novel techniques for digital arts practices, with an emphasis on critical and creative uses of emerging technologies, VR/AR, computing, immersion, graphics, and human‐machine interaction.

History
Papers that engage with the history of electronic art and new media, including collaborative practices; critical making; the history and theory of multimedia computing; virtual, augmented, or mixed reality; visualization or interactive techniques.

General Art Papers Submission Information

  • Submissions must adhere to the ACM SIGGRAPH Art Papers Author Manuscript Guidelines.
  • Utilize the Art Papers Manuscript Template to write your paper. 
  • Maximum word count: manuscripts may contain up to a maximum of 3,500 words, including bibliographic references. Manuscripts that exceed the word count will not be considered and will be rejected. 
  • Submitted papers must be complete and publishable in their current form at time of submission.
  • Submissions must be anonymized and identified solely by their unique submission number as generated by the online SIGGRAPH submission system. All author names and/or other identifying information must be removed from the manuscript prior to submission. Submissions that are not anonymized will be deemed ineligible and rejected.
  • Art papers submissions are uploaded in PDF format. The submission ID should appear instead of the author's name in your uploaded art paper PDF file. See the Art Papers Author Manuscript Guidelines and the Art Papers Manuscript Template for where to include the submission ID in the manuscript PDF. 
  • Any figures or images included in the paper must be camera ready and NOT contain either your submission ID or any other other identifying marks. See the Art Papers Author Manuscript Guidelines for figure dimensions and file-format requirements. Figures are uploaded at time of submission as individual files in addition to the PDF. 
  • It is necessary to complete a separate online submission form for each art paper you intend to submit. 
  • Papers must employ proper use of academic written English. Non-native English speakers may use the English Review Service to help improve the text of submissions. Please note that this process takes time, so plan far ahead.
  • Papers must include substantial, relevant citations and a references and notes section.
  • For time‐based works, links to videos provided as supporting materials are encouraged. The video should keep the author identities anonymous. The maximum file size for videos supplied as supporting materials is 100 MB. File format must be either .MP4 or .MOV The video(s) must be uploaded at time of submission. 
  • Prior to writing and submitting papers for submission, authors are encouraged to review sample Art Paper articles published in the special issues of Leonardo in 2014 and 2015. For example, these examples fulfill the submission criteria:

  • UPON ACCEPTANCE:  If your paper is ACCEPTED for publication, you will be REQUIRED to submit a 30-second video summarizing the key contributions of your paper to be used for promotional trailers. The video must adhere to the following specifications:

29.97 FPS
16:9 aspect ratio
30 seconds duration maximum (shorter than 30 seconds is OK, but not longer).
Musical background audio track without vocals that you have permissions to use in the audio track of this video.

How to Submit
To submit your paper, log in to the SIGGRAPH Information System, select "Begin a New Submission," and then select "create" for the Art Papers submission form.

Submission Materials and Information
Your submission must include the following materials and information:

  • A single PDF document for jury review (compliant with the manuscript guidelines) that includes:

Paper: A 3,500-word (maximum) manuscript that is complete and publication-ready at time of submission. The maximum word count includes all text, including body of the paper, abstract, notes, captions, bibliographic references, and glossary. 

Abstract: A 100-word (maximum) abstract summarizing the key points of the paper written in the third person. This is included in the 3,500 word maximum.

Figures: A maximum of 10 figures may be included within the manuscript text. See the manuscript guidelines for figure file format and file-naming requirements.

References and Notes: A bibliography with all references should be included in the PDF at the end of the text and is included in the maximum word count. 

  • SIS submission information including:

Paper title

A 50-word or less summary of the main contributions/achievements of the work suitable for display in the conference web site and promotional materials

One “representative image” suitable for use in the conference web site and promotional materials. Provide a JPEG or PNG image of the highest possible quality, at least 1500x1000 pixels in size, at 300 dpi, and 24-bit (RGB) color.  Please read the updated Representative Image Guidelines for more information before uploading your file.

A 100-word bio for the author who will present the paper at the conference. 

No more than 10 images corresponding to the 10 figures in the manuscript. See the Art Papers Author Manuscript Guidelines for image-format and file-naming requirements.

Supplemental Materials
Authors are permitted to provide up to three additional supplementary materials that will be posted on the MIT Press web site to accompany the paper. Multimedia content may include videos, code, audio files, as well as additional images and/or other supplemental text files (up to 100MB each). Each file must be accompanied with a title, 50-word description, and caption (including any credits and copyright information). Video file formats accepted are: .mov, .avi or .mp4

All complete submissions received by the deadline will be acknowledged by email. For this purpose, a submission is complete if a paper-ID has been assigned, and a PDF file of the paper, a 50-word description, and a representative image have been successfully uploaded. Such submissions will be reviewed unless they are withdrawn by the author. For more information about the Art Papers submission and review process, please refer to the Submissions FAQ.

Important Forms
If a third party created and has granted you the right to include that person's image, art, and/or other media in your submission, the person will need to complete the Leonardo Image Permission and Release (Form A) and return it to you. Please forward the completed form to SIGGRAPH 2017 Conference Administration via email (confadmin (at) siggraph.org).

If you have commissioned someone to take, provide, or otherwise create an image or piece of work specifically for inclusion in your submission, that person will need to complete the Leonardo Work for Hire Permission and Release (Form B) and return it to you. Please forward the completed form to SIGGRAPH 2017 Conference Administration via email (confadmin (at) siggraph.org).

Begin Your Submission to Art Papers

 

Evaluation

Submissions will be administratively rejected without review if it is found that:

  • The submission violates the ACM Policy and Procedures on Plagiarism.
  • The submission is a dual submission; that is, if the submission is simultaneously under review for any other conference or publication. For more details, see the Work Submitted Elsewhere section of the Submissions FAQ.
  • Electronic files have been submitted that have been designed to have side effects other than presenting the submitted work to reviewers and committee members (for example, a "phone home" script).
  • It appears that the paper contains material for which the submitters have not secured the necessary copyrights. Previously published work may not be submitted, nor may the same work be submitted to any other conference or journal during the SIGGRAPH 2017 Art Papers review period.

The Art Papers Jury will evaluate papers using the following criteria:

  • Scope and magnitude of its contribution to literature on digital arts, computer graphics, and/or interactive techniques
  • Clarity of thesis and compelling exposition
  • Quality and relevance of references to establish context and support author’s claims
  • Quality and relevance of support media to reinforce the author’s claims

Each paper will be distributed to three or more experts for review. However, if the jury determines that a submission has been previously published, or is off topic, incomplete, or otherwise unsuitable for publication, the submission will be rejected without external review.

Once reviews are complete, the committee will meet to deliberate the final outcome of each paper at the Art Papers Jury Meeting. If there is not a clear consensus among the original reviewers, additional reviews will be solicited.

Following the jury meeting, email notification of rejection or conditional acceptance status will be sent to submitters, who will then be granted access to the written reviews and scores.

Conditionally accepted papers undergo a second reviewing process, in which a referee (a member of the Art Papers Jury) verifies that the final version of the paper is acceptable (that any required changes have been made, and that other changes made by the authors, perhaps in response to reviewer comments, have not compromised the paper in any way). This second and final stage determines the final acceptance status of all papers. The referees' decisions are final. Papers that do not satisfy the referee in the second stage of reviewing and/or that are not uploaded in final form by the final deadline, together with the original or revised versions of the submitted supplementary material, will be rejected. 

All decisions of the jury are final; there is neither a rebuttal period nor an appeals process.

Upon Acceptance

You will be notified of conditional acceptance or rejection of your Art Paper in mid-March 2017. To convert a conditionally accepted paper to an accepted paper, authors will be required to make edits requested in the committee's reviews. Final edits must be submitted and approved by the committee by the announced deadline. The timeline for completing edits is extremely tight, and you should plan to be available during the last two weeks of March to achieve this goal.

Accepted Art Papers are presented by their authors at SIGGRAPH 2017 and published in a special SIGGRAPH issue of Leonardo, The Journal of the International Society of the Arts, Sciences and Technology. Art Papers will be documented on the SIGGRAPH 2017 web site and in the ACM Digital Library. Documentation will also be available through the ACM SIGGRAPH web site.

If your Art Paper is accepted, you will be able to update your basic submission information so that it can be included in the conference program and web site. This information needs to be finalized two weeks after acceptance.

You must provide a final, edited, camera-ready paper. Digital supplements, including sample materials for inclusion on promotional screens at the conference, should also be submitted by that time.

The presenter of record is expected to present the paper at SIGGRAPH 2017 and will benefit from the SIGGRAPH 2017 Recognition Policy. Please contact the Art Papers Chair for more information.
