Applying Color Theory to Digital Media and Visualization

This course examines the foundations of color theory and how these methods apply to building effective digital media. It defines color harmony and demonstrates its application to case studies including include historic and new infographics as well as time-series animations. It reviews the Pantone Matching System, the Munsell Color System, and other hue systems, and examines the features of ColorBrewer, Adobe’s Capture CC app, and Josef Albers' Interaction of Color app. It also introduces Gamut Mask and Color Proportions of an Image analysis tools. The course concludes with a hands-on session that teaches how to use online and mobile apps to successfully capture, analyze, and store color schemes for future use in visual analytics. Attendees are encouraged to bring small JPEG examples of digital-media content for color analyses during the hands-on session.
