A town-hall discussion to establish desiderata for submission of nifty assignments to the Computer Graphics Educational Materials Source (CGEMS) at the Eurographics Digital Library (accessible through the ACM Digital Library). CGEMS is looking for computer-graphics assignments (curricular material) that are high quality, straightforward to use and incorporate in class, and fit easily into the computer-graphics curricular framework. Topics include the expected CGEMS paper-submission format and accompanying practical material (code).
The panel begins with a discussion of a template for CGEMS papers and proposes that submitters identify where in the CGEMS taxonomy the nifty assignment belongs (within the CG curriculum) consistent with two criteria: selection of appropriate topic headings, and (perhaps more important), the assignment’s curricular level (for example, first-year undergraduate, etc.).
For the submission format, the panel focuses on the nifty-assignment format adopted by SIGCSE, ACM’s Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education. Then it considers the ACM’s Computing Classification System (CCS) and the ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Task Force on Computing Curricula (2013) as useful taxonomies for helping specify the CGEMS metadata. CGEMS submissions should follow nifty-assignment examples accepted by SIGCSE, available here.
After reviewing examples of potential CGEMS nifty assignments, the panel discusses points raised at the EuroGraphics CGEMS panel:
• What types of materials should be included?
• What is the rationale for acceptance?
• What is an appropriate executable or source-code format?
• Should a common nomenclature be adopted?
• How can CGEMS be encouraged to take on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math)?
