This talk discusses an interdisciplinary, collaborative project among students of photography and students of 3D digital design at the Rochester Institute of Technology, which implemented a homemade, functioning reflectance-transformation imaging device for high-resolution scanning of physical materials to produce CG normal maps and textures.

The 3D immersion workshop at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo was designed across three different media so that students can experience form with their digitized hands and as a virtual environment. Faculty in ceramics, printmaking, and virtual reality worked together to prepare the assignments. Students explored materials in real and virtual spaces.
